The Skies Explode to Mark the New Year

The fireworks rumbled and exploded constantly for 10 minutes, from the stroke of midnight. Listening to it in my sunken garden, not being able to see one sparkler of it, not a flash of colour, not one star burst, nothing, I thought this is what the end of the world would sound like, happening in the distance.

I have to add, that afterwards I heard cheering in the distance from my neighbours all around me, who had, clearly, seen it, who were up higher than me, who haven't had their city views built in...yet.

It is just that 10 minutes is a long time to hold your hands over your Bulldog’s ears.

We were in bed at 12.25am.
