I remember years ago when Rachel LeVine and I were driving through Europe, in our green Citroen 2CV, to catch the ferry back to England. I think we were going from Netherlands to Belgium and we stopped just before the border and spent all our coins on Danishes before we crossed into the next country. We somewhat misjudged how much coin we had and the nice woman behind the counter handed us a huge box of Danishes, which we proceeded to gormandise as we drove on. They were the best I have ever tasted.

I did eat a cinnamon roles on your behalf when I was in Sweden a few weeks ago. You would have loved the giant ones from Gothenburg!
It's tough work, I know...
I think the best pastries I ever tasted was when I was leaving Denmark. We had pockets full of change and we banged it all down on the counter and said to the nice lady that we wanted pastries in exchange and she gave us this huge box of them. I think we had more money in change than we realised. I remember we ate them from the bonnet of my Citroen with coffee just before we got to the border. They have always stuck in my mind the quality and the quantity.
