David's Birthday

It was a rainy day. You might say the perfect kind of morning for baking.

I made David a birthday cake in the morning, banana with lemon icing. That is what he asked for, so that is what he got. My new favourite banana cake.

We went over to Sam’s place, to get fish pond accoutrement. Brian Wang was there with his new boyfriend, Mark Mackie, who now rent the place. Mark picked mandarins from Sam’s prolific mandarin tree for us. I think he may still be in the “impress” phase.

We bought gold fish in Bell Street, not far from Sam’s place. We always try to go through the back streets from his place to the aquarium, and we always have trouble finding it that way. You’d think we’d learn. It’s kind of a challenge now.

The aquarium guy said we should only buy four, as it takes some time for the correct bacteria to establish itself in a newly filled pond. “Buy some more in summer,” he said.

So, we took our four fish home and put them in the pond. It's a fairly big pond and four fish disappeared out of sight pretty quickly. I'm sure if you'd been watching us, you would have seen Sam and me and Buddy gazing down into the pond with slightly disappointed looks on our faces with no fish in sight.

We went to David’s birthday party in the evening. Sebastian, Tom V, Robbie Casadei and David.

Sebastian, of course, complained about the gluten cake. But, that was what the birthday boy wanted and he didn’t mention that I’d need to make a gluten free version. We bought Sebastian gluten free Florentines on the way, just in case he was there, good thing hey.

I haven’t seen Robbie Casadei for some time. We used to all party together back in the day, when David and he were boyfriends.

It was David’s night, of course, the ‘anyway, back to me’ queen had every reason for it to be all about him, of course, being his very special day. Of course, David thinks he is very special on any day.

Sebastian cooked, of course. The rest of us bought a mixture of deserts from Italian biscuits made by Italian mothers, to pavlova and chocolate slice.

It was a boy’s night. You were expecting something less. We laughed. All old mates. The food was nice, as was the company.
